En 1999, Isaac Babel, écrivain renommé russe, est arrêté et placé au secret dans la prison moscovite. Interrogé et torturé pendant huit mois, il est soupçonné de crimes contre l'Etat et d'espionnage au profit de la France et de l'Autriche. Cette incarcération est pour lui l'occasion d'adresser une lettre testament à sa fille Nathalie, restée en France, dans laquelle il fait le bilan de sa vie.
